Common mistakes when fishing salmon on the Kola River.

Parts 3-6

Part 3.

Unfortunately, the desire to throw the fly as far as possible dominates over all other technical solutions. Related to this is another mistake. To raise the line from water and throw away the fly is not easy for all anglers. Even experienced anglers often use the technique of multi-blank casting. But we must remember that in areas with a flat and smooth over the surface of the water salmon stops responding to fly even after one struck a line in the water. The chances of catching the salmon sharply reduced if the angler is not changing the position before the next cast. And if the casting technique is not perfect, the chance is minimal.

Part 4.

If we do not know the exact location of salmon in the Kola River, there is a high risk to scare them with incorrect casts or even to miss his locating spot. It is therefore very important to have an accurate idea of where and at what trajectory the fly was moving. If you are able to exactly replicate the previous cast, you will be able to make a correct idea of what territory treats your front sight. If you conduct a search of salmon, it is important to investigate every time a new territory. You can take a new step, you can change the direction or distance casting. The new territory - a new chance to find location of salmon.

Part 5

If you have the ability to increase the pace of fishing, then you'll increase your chances of catching fish. The cycle of preparation for the cast, correction of line and position of the fly, its effective and ineffective drift, preparations for a new cast all these factors take time. Usually, depending on the situation on the river when fishing with a two-handed rod such cycle takes 12 to 16 seconds. At this time, efficient operation of flies can range from 2-3 seconds to 8-10 seconds. This time depends on the nature of the portion of the river, the flow rate, for example, and the position of the angler. But first of all it depends on your experience and ability to work the rod and line. We must also remember some of the tactical aspects. For example, sometimes more beneficial will be elementary casts over the head with a close range than trying to fish at long range using Spey casting and its variants. If you add the all aspects of fishing, with a choice of position, direction, and casting distance, technical capabilities to make a cast, there will be a huge difference in the effectiveness of the two anglers fishing two different ways. You can verify this by using a simple mathematical device. You just need time efficient work flies in a single cycle multiply by the number of casts in a day of fishing. As an example, I will give the result of Kola river June catching in one of the teams, which included five experienced angler. One of them during a hard week caught 3 salmon (one of which weighed 15 kg) and lost 3 more fish. Other members of the team just had had one attack of a salmon or did not have anything! It speaks primarily about the readiness of various fishermen to adapt to irregular and difficult fishing conditions on the Kola River this season.

Part 6.

Do not be surprised if I do not mention the name of efficient and effective flies for Kola river. If you decide to change something after a few hours without result, believe me, it is wise to change something in paragraphs 1-5, which have been outlined above. A fly and method of presentation is necessary to choose an on-site fishing.

Perhaps all this seems too complicated, but these tactical and technical problems we solve for each fishing trip. This year the situation on the Kola River  was very unfavorable. A large number of fishermen and the small number of salmon have led to organizational problems and errors. This was especially frustrating for those anglers who are not fortunate to catch a record salmon.

Common mistakes when fishing salmon on the Kola River. Kola Peninsula, Russia.

Kola river can not be attributed to simple rivers for fishing. It is quite large, especially at the beginning of the season when the water melts after the snow . The river bed is also quite varied. Along with large stretches there are a number of sites with fast current. The bottom of the river is lined with large boulders which often form a big difference in the depths. That is, the river is complicated enough for fly fishing, you need to know exactly where to enter the river, and where it is not worth your time.
Common fishing tactic is a long fishing in one place, at one shoal or reach, as the change of position takes a lot of time. In the presence of a large number of salmon that tactic is justified.
A feature of this year was abnormally hot weather in late May and early June. This may have led to a very sluggish movement of sea salmon in the river and to a drop in activity of the fish that were already in the river. Need to take into account the possibility of a cyclic change in the number of salmon that is extremely uneven in the river over the years.
Compared with 2012, the number of salmon in the river was noticeably smaller.
The first reaction to the changed conditions of fishermen  was an attempt to quickly change the fishing spots. It's a natural reaction to the absence of signs of salmon in the river, on the lack of response of salmon to the bait. Unfortunately, this tactic quickly change places has led to erratic and uncontrollable movements of fishermen on the river. As a result, some areas fished by 4-5 times during the day, other parts of the river have been used occasionally.
As a result, fishermen who used the night or early morning hours, doing better. It was important to be the first in a promising position, because it seemed that in some areas stayed only one or two salmon.

These features of the season in 2013 led to the need to change tactics fishing. Unfortunately, many anglers are not able to adapt to the new situation on the river. This applies to all three components of a successful salmon fishing.

Part 1

First of all it concerned about search of salmon spots, identifying the most promising places for fishing. I have already mentioned that the search for salmon is a chaotic change sections of the river with huge losses of time by moving by boats, occupation of new positions and preparing tackles. We will not mention the situation when in one area there was an inadequate amount of anglers. Changes in water level in the river and a small amount of fish resulted in that it was difficult to determine the exact fishing spot at that moment. It was therefore totally unjustified tactics prolonged fishing in one place, at one position. A better tactic was searching salmon in the entire area available for fishing. To do this it was necessary to quickly process all the territory from the beginning of a promising perspective site to its end. In the absence of active fish, the remaining time to focus on the most interesting and challenging points of this section of the river. If it was not possible to detect salmon after repeating the search of the area, than it was necessary to change the section of the river, or take a different position, for example, fishing from the other side of the river. In this case, new points and salmon spots become available. Totally unjustified attempt to seek salmon on secondary sites or bayous. Here the chance to find salmon is much lower. It would be right after the first try of the river area to highlight the most important places where the appearance of the salmon is most likely. At low water levels, these places are fairly obvious. Identify them with some experience is quite easy.

Kola river, Pomp Pool, Stephen vs good size salmon

Part 2.

The changing water levels, a small amount of salmon and its passivity has led to considerable difficulties in finding a prospective fishing places. Therefore significantly increased the requirements for the presentation of flies. I found it strange that a significant part of fishermen refused to change anything in the fishing technique, even after several days without result. With rare exceptions, most of the fishermen tried to just throw the line as far as possible. In this case, the basic technique is to Spey casting or its variants at a rather large angle to the river. This technique results in a high rate of lateral movement of the front sight. This technique is justified during high water activity is high salmon. Thus, it is possible to test a large area and to find active fish. But the technique is very sensitive at low water levels and low activity of the fish. If there are technical problems on the cast and incorrect positions of the angler, this technique does not bring results. Casting a transverse direction leads to unnecessarily rapid movement of flies after the cord. If you add an error in the exercise of casting, the flow of water straightens cord and undergrowth along the arc, and the front sight is developing an incredible speed. After casting about 20 meters across and downstream, fly passes about 30 meters in 5-6 seconds that are required in order to for our straightened cord directly below us down the river. As a result of casting bead moves diagonally at 2-3 - 4 meters per second. First, this fly can not be interesting for salmon. Second, the front sight very quickly leaves the prospective zone and goes to the bank. If you have taken the right attitude and perspective place is right below you in the river, then this technique may produce a result. After all, at the end of the presentation fly still stops and start working. But if you stand back from the forward-looking place, the flow takes aim at the shore. You're just wasting your time. There are two ways to correct the situation. It is best to use both these methods. First, take the position as close as possible to the center and closer to the salmon spot in the river. Second, apply Mending upstream. This way you can use your favorite places Harvesting throw an acute angle to the flow, significantly reduce the rate of lateral drift flies, hold it for a long time in the promising area. Finally you will minimize the effects of incorrect casting technique, in which cord lead undergrowth and falling water loops, which leads to loss of control over the bead and loss of operation time. In the end,the current will straighten the tackle  and the fly will begin to work, still not coming out of a promising band.

Mid-June. High season at Chavanga.

Can be taken literally - it was hot season all over the Kola peninsula. Blue sky, the midnight sun over the horizon, very warm weather without rain led to a further decrease in the water level in the river. The water temperature in the evening was 20-22 degrees. In the morning it was cooler, water cooled to 18 degrees Celsius. The river has become comfortable for fishing.  Many places became available among the waterfalls, which are usually only open for fishing in the middle of the season, in July.

During the day you can easily choose comofortable spots for fishing any sides of the river. The river flows from the north to the south. Therefore, during the day different river parts covered by shadows in different ways. This makes salmon move from  one position to another. You can use both banks to take an advantageous position   of a shadow bank. I noticed that some anglers ignore the opportunity to use both banks for fishing. In my view, do not miss the opportunity to look at the other side of the river. This makes it possible to understand the river, see new places and find the right tactics for fishing salmon. I always try to pay attention to anglers looking for the best places to fish and the best position for the angler. You can take into account the position of the sun and to choose the right bank for fishing. With the right sun lighting, river will show you the best places - the tunnels and recesses on the bottom  formed   by the main stream, pits and mash stones in main current, suitable for salmon location. During the period of low water, the ability to navigate on the river and find the areas with the main current flow is the basis for all further fishing tactics.

First cloudy day caused a sharp rise in activity and an increase in catches of salmon. At the same time larger salmon appeared, males that entered the river in autumn and early spring.
Some fish had wounds which occured  in the river after the winter. But it had little effect on their activity.

A few notes about the tactics of salmon fishing.

If  to characterize the first week of June, you can highlight a few points.

First, the weather was warm for a few weeks. The Chavanga water level was going down quickly enough. The water temperature rose to 14-16 degrees much earlier than usual. As a result, the state of the river in the first week of June was as at the end of June in normal years.

Secondly, the intensive salmon runs in the autumn and relatively favorable winter led to the accumulation of a large number of fish in the river.

Third, under  the rapid onset of summer   salmon stay not in a slow water pools, but   into rapids sections and fast flowing runs.

Fourth, smaller salmon were able to quickly adapt to the conditions of a rapid rise of water temperature. Salmon weighing 2.5-3.5 kg were a significant part of the catch. Large salmon were active only in the morning, during a temporary reduction in water temperature to 18 degrees.

Fifth, few  fresh sea run  salmon entered the river and want to   show  normal activity in a warm and low water. Much of the fresh salmon remained in the sea not far from the mouth.

Sixth, these conditions are forced to change the usual tactics of fishing by large provocative flies. More successful was the tactic that usually used in the middle of the summer, at the end of June - July. Best was a local presentation of small flies in the place closely to the salmon lyes. It   was important as possible to reduce the lateral drift of the fly, as salmon in most cases, did not attack the fly, which went too quickly to the side. Further fall in the water level has resulted in even more sluggish response to the rapidly drifting salmon lures.

Seventh, the overall impact of the Chavanga fishing was quite high, which is primarily due to a high concentration of salmon in the river.

Strelna river news. Salmon fishing in Russia on the Kola peninsula.

Spring this year was characterized by a very rapid melting of snow and ice melting on the rivers all over the Kola peninsula. By early May, the river is almost free of ice and spring flooding was unusually strong and short. Very warm the last week in May led to the fall of the water level in the river. The main waterfalls are passable for salmon, and much of the fish was able to climb up the river. So we had to change the usual order of salmon fishing and focus section of the river, which lies directly above the falls. Typically, fishing in the river  estuary and   below the falls and was very efficient. But now had to spend a lot of effort to find the right tactics salmon .. But it made the fishing interesting. A year ago, I was even more disappointed by the ease with which it was possible to catch a fish. This season also shows that you can not relax and you should always be ready to change tactics and method of catching salmon.

Kola salmon fishing. Beginning of a season.

HI!

We have just returned home for a short vacation.
Season this year has turned difficult. Early spring and hot summer have changed the normal fishing everywhere..

Kola river  had problems with the silver salmon run.
Chavan'ga  river - sea run salmon was also passive, but the resident fish (autumn run and    early spring run) caught well.
There were also problems on the river Strelna, where due to the low water biggest part of the spring run salmon  ahead of time was able to climb up the river.

River Chavan'ga was in better condition during the hot spring and the rapid fall of the water level. Salmon that entered the river in autumn and early spring, has had to adapt and showed good activity throughout the river. Although it should be noted the rapid decrease in the activity of large salmon. When the water temperature 18-22 degrees accounted for the bulk of catches of salmon in the 2-3.5 kg of body weight. Larger salmon from 4 to 7 kg less often get hooked. It was necessary to use a variety of techniques for  their provocation.
